Clouds are categorised according to their shape: they can be either layered (stratus, Latin for layer), or convective (cumulus, Latin for heap, piled-up). To distinguish them even further, clouds are also classified according to the height above ground of the cloud base. Three levels are recognised: low-level clouds, mid-level clouds, and high-level clouds. While some clouds may have their base in the lower level, they can, however, reside in more than one level.
